Every year, it’s the same story:

I know it’s coming, my calendar is the written proof of that. I try to plan my weekend accordingly so that I get to bed early to make up for the one hour lost on Saturday night sleep. Alas, no matter what I do, I end up losing that hour and wake up on Sunday sleep-deprived and disoriented with the time change. Then there is the mission of changing all of the clocks in the room (the car is by far the worst one).

But on to Walsh-related things:

International Events

Thinking Day collaboration with Girl Scouts of America

Our International Coordinator arranged for me to go speak to around 200 Girl Scouts and their troop leaders about all things Canadian. This was in light of World Thinking Day, a day recognized by Girl Scouts all over the world to educate one another about different cultures and the diversity that exists within our communities, our nations, and the world. I was excited to go speak to the girls, as I had been Girl Guide (the Canadian equivalent to Girl Scouts) for many years and know how important this organization is for girls to gain a sense of community, fellowship, independence, self-worth, and awareness of the world around them. I had a good time, got a few laughs from the crowds, and was treated to a gift of Girl Scout cookies! Yum

World Week is approaching

Get ready for a week of International food, music, art and culture in the David center! Every year, World Week is dedicated to expand Walsh residents’ knowledge of other nations in a fun and interactive way. Keep on a lookout for emails and posters announcing some of the events and highlights this week will entail.

Tennis time

Adventures in gatorland: Florida Spring Break 2011!

Another spring break tennis trip success! The weather held out beautifully, the tennis provided with excellent competition to get us ready for our season, and fun was had by all as we enjoyed a new location (and by far the best one out of my four years). Here are some pictures, compliments of Barbie Lewis, a Junior on the Women’s team:

The inside of our condos.
Business Club Bulletin

Sherwin-Williams to come pay Walsh students a visit

Career Event Alert! Watch your emails and save the date: March 23rd from 4:30pm-6pm. BCC will be hosting a guest speaker at our meeting: a recruiter for Sherwin-Williams! This is a great opportunity to speak to someone from HR to ask questions about applying for jobs, interviews, resumes, and all about being a young professional after graduating. Come with questions and an attitude that means business! There are potential job openings available that the recruiter is looking to fill.

Work Out Room gets a new coat (of paint)

I know that isn’t extremely interesting, but hey, I was away from Walsh all week! I’m searching for news here.

Attention Seniors: Cap and Gown Pick-up THIS week

to everyone graduating this Spring Semester, Tuesday and Wednesday is your cap and gown pick up dates! While you are there, please remember to vote for an Educator and Mentor of the year. Nominees are in, so all you need to do is vote from the selection of candidates at a table located by the cap and gowns.

A Guest from Israel

On Thursday in my International Business class, we arranged for a woman from Israel to come and speak to us about entrepreneurial businesses and inventions that are being developed in this small, young country. It was a very informative presentation and we learned how vital business in Israel really is to our modern lifestyle. I had no idea so many inventions and innovations come from Israel!

Travel Tips and Tangents

Seeing as I have some pictures from Orlando, this week will be a general rant about travelling.

It surprises me how little people travel within their own countries. I myself have only been to 3 of our 10 provinces and haven’t been close to any of our 3 territories. I know my way around Rome almost as well as I know Toronto! Speaking to other students, I find a similar trend. When given the option to travel, people are all too eager to go overseas and overlook the potential of their own national backyards.

As I get to know the states better, I realize how diverse they really are, some of them almost like countries within themselves. The beliefs, the daily life, the food, the music, the dress, and even the language changes among the states and creates quite an interesting patchwork of diversity. Geographically, the United States offers almost every major ecosystem, with different types of terrain, flora, and fauna that differs in each state.

So next time you find yourself looking to get away, save some money and splurge on a trip to your own country. Find a state, province, or territory that you have never been to and go explore it! Who knows what treasures await you there . . .

Have a great week back at school everyone!

Hello all!

Long weekends always make the week fly by. Having only two days of class is not too shabby if you ask me! People ask me what I do with all of my free time. What free time? I am booked daily with activities but frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

International Events

Foreign students flying down the hills

The International Club ran into some good luck! Our overnight trip to Peek n’ Peak was a huge success. :D The temperatures were balmy (so much so that one of the students went snowboarding in shorts), the snow still soft enough to break the falls and the resort had just the right atmosphere. Almost everyone who went out picked it up well enough to join the rest of us on the normal runs in the afternoon. Although it was slightly frightening to watch some of my fellow Internationals fly straight down some runs, everyone made it out alright that day. The next few days, however, was a different story. My roommate in particular was more or less bed-ridden for 2 days due to every muscle being sore and stiff. I guess some caught the ski bug, as some internationals went up to Brandywine for college night yesterday to try it out again.

Tennis time

Mini match to get us warmed up

This week, we split the teams up and will be holding a mini match between teammates. This will get us in the groove and prepare us for our matches in Orlando next week. The men played their mini match yesterday and I must say, they look really strong this year! I predict a successful season for them.

Orlando Calling

In less than 7 days, both the men and the women will head down to Orlando, Florida for our Spring Break trip! I am excited to see our new location, to play some new teams, and of course, enjoy some sunshine without having to bundle up.

Student Government Proposes a Father’s Day

Not to be confused with the Hallmark day in June, Walsh would like to create an event that is just for you and a male role model in your life. Student Government is currently organizing an activity-filled weekend for students and their dads (or uncles, grandfathers, etc) as a way of saying thank-you for taking care of us, providing us with guidance, and being a pillar of support in our lives. Keep looking at your Inbox!

An early spring???!! Winter is BACK

So that was a close call, but clearly winter is back for one last hurrah! Although many people are not sharing my enthusiasm with this idea, I did convince some people to make the best of it. On Wednesday, as the snow looked just right, I proposed an afternoon of snowman-making and was met, surprisingly, with several eager students ready to help out! Here is what we created:

A mom, dad, child, baby, and faithful canine companion, complete with some festive "holiday" trees!

Unfortunately, that night it was destroyed by unknown culprits.

Travel Tips and Tangents

Back to Europe this week mi amici! This time it is to Florence, a city I was just in for a weekend but will remember for a lifetime. Florence is famous for it’s Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, as the setting for the birth of the Renaissance, housing notable historic figures and artworks (Michelangelo’s David) and as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Even in the rain and cold temperatures, I must agree that it was a very beautiful city with many things to see and do. It had lovely shops to explore in the day time, and a great night life atmosphere. A “must see” destination if you are ever in Italy.

Looking inside the dome of Florence's Cathedral. I don't know what a bitten hand means . . .

My next issue will be in March, so have a great Spring Break and enjoy your week off!

Hey everyone!

Now that the storms have passed and people can finally get their cars de-iced, it is back to the grindstone here at Walsh. Be careful of that black ice though, it has already claimed the dignity of many students across campus. If one does find themselves on the ground after a fight with friction, just be glad that you brightened up someone else’s day with your comic fall.

International Events

Dating in America and Ski Trip

I wish I could comment more on the first part. This week, the International Club hosted a discussion on the differences of dating and relationships here in the United States. It may sound silly at first, but the truth is that many cultures around the globe have very different customs and expectations when it comes to courtship and dating. Had I been present, I would give you details. I can only assume that fun was had by all.

In old news, our ski trip is officially booked and filled! Now all we need is a cold enough day to keep the snow light and fluffy to cushion the imminent falls that will occur with our first-time skiers and boarders.

Tennis time

The men have their first match today down in Springfield, OH. Most of the team left around 4:30am today to attend a doubles tournament. Good luck boys! The women had an 8:00am practice today, so both teams were up bright and early, all in the name of tennis.

Business Club Bulletin

Valentine’s Day Bake Sale . . . SUCCESS!!!

Well after two days of sales I must say, the BCC Bake sale was a HUGE success! We sold out of almost all of our goods and made more than $100 for the club. Thank-you to everyone who helped bake, sell, and advertize for the event. A big thank-you to my roommate, Ashley Smith, who provided us with the majority of our goodies. Please check out her page, she is amazingly good at what she does and her products are outrageously tasty! http://www.facebook.com/pages/ASs-Christmas-Creations/173495779347010

We are in the process of discussing changes for the club and our vision for future years. More updates TBA!

In Other Walsh News . . .

Student Government Activity

This past Thursday was the most intense Student Government I have ever been to! Debates, challenges, bylaw research, genuine interest in topics and general student interactions made this past meeting interesting indeed. As an executive member of Student Government, I must say that I was very impressed with the input and interest from the senators and other exec. board members. Although things did get a little heated at times, we all learned a lot from this experience and I hope next meeting is even better This Sunday, all Student Government participants are invited to go bowling as a “welcome back” party of sorts, provided by the exec. board of Student Government

Heating Up

It is difficult to judge how to dress here at Walsh. As much as the weather tells me to wear heavy knitwear and layers, as soon as I enter a building I am blasted with such heat that it makes me wish I was wearing a T-shirt and shorts. I think this is where the problem lies. I will remind everyone that yes, it is winter time and unfortunately, that means wearing more than a single layer of clothing to class. It wouldn’t feel like the Sahara in the first place if everyone dressed appropriately so that room temperatures could be set to comfortable living temperatures. And let’s not forget the energy savings too! Remember, smaller bills for Walsh means smaller bills for students!

Kindness in the Cafeteria

I was impressed this week with dining services. As I was filling my plate with General Tao (or is it General Tso? Canadian/American translation issues), I lamented the lack of broccoli mixed with the chicken. Sure enough, one of the staff ran to the kitchen and brought me all the steamed broccoli I could ask for to mix into my plate. Thank-you for completing my meal, five stars for customer service!

Travel Tips and Tangents

One of my loyal readers has asked me to bring my focus away from the UK, so this week I am moving to sunny Madrid, Spain:

Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is a wonderful European city with both a local and international vibe. Modern mixes with the antique, classic style mingles with modern day visions, and the laid back Spanish attitude balances out the metropolitan, hectic feel of city life.
Which means one more hour of sleep this Sunday! Another reason why I love the Fall. This sleep-in is needed too, as this semester is finally starting to take its toll on my mental alertness.

However, there is hardly time to think of rest with so many things going on here at Walsh. With just a few weeks to go until the end of the semester, the pace is as quick as ever and events just keep coming one after the other.

International Events

International Dinner 2010 (updated)

It’s that time of year again, time for an International Experience! Mark your calendars for the evening of Saturday, November 13th at 6:30pm for the Annual International Dinner. We will have our usual buffet of amazing and diverse dishes as well as various forms of entertainment such as a fashion show and musical performances by our very own Walsh students! We also will be doing some fundraising during the evening, including having a recipe book for sale that includes some of the dishes that will be served at the dinner. A big thank-you to Student Government for helping us fund the evening! Keep checking email updates or contact our club President, thomasabberton@walsh.edu for more information. Ticket prices are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for Walsh students and children.

Tennis time

The women went out last night to hit at the Hall of Fame tennis courts with 3 potential recruits. Afterwards we had some team bonding time back in my apartment. Thanks ladies for showing the recruits a great time and taking them around campus!

Both teams will be starting our fundraising letters soon. Hopefully we can receive enough donations to go down to Orlando for Spring break again.

Business Club Bulletin

Business Luncheon SUCCESS!!!!

A huge “Thank-You” to everyone who helped out at the Annual Business Scholarship Luncheon! We had around 270 guests, with a good mix of students, faculty and businesspeople. John Nance was both an informative and entertaining speaker and I know I learned quite a few concepts that I will remember to put into practice. The meal was very tasty and I wasn’t even disappointed when I did not see the usual cheesecake for dessert (it was pumpkin mousse instead, yum!).

Events to look forward to: Casino Night on November 16th

In Other Walsh News . . .

Registration Begins!

Make sure you get online or get to Student Affairs and sign up for Spring classes! Wow, already thinking about my last semester at Walsh

Study Abroad Programs gaining ground

As a strong advocate of study abroad programs ( I have been on 3, with a 4th coming up this summer), I recommend you do whatever it takes to get out there and study in another country! Ryan Ozar made an appearance at Student Government this past Thursday to help promote Walsh’s study abroad trips as well as clarify some myths and confusions about what it takes to study abroad. It IS affordable guys, so ask your advisors and talk to Ryan at rozar@walsh.edu for more details!

Travel Tips and Tangents

Where to this week? Seeing as I am trying to clean out my computer before it kicks the bucket, I am going back to old adventures (think 2006). This week, let’s travel East and North to the Scottish Highlands!

This is Hamish, a fine example of Highland cattle, a tourist favourite at Kilmahog, Scotland.

The Highlands in Scotland are simply breathtaking. Large rolling hills and brush-covered mountains abound. It looks and feels very medieval and one can tell this area is only meant for the heartier of people. Both people and bovines must brave the cold temperatures, harsh winds and high rainfall.

Awesome views during a stop on our way to Loch Ness.

There is no direct way to get anywhere when you head up this far. It’s more of a “follow the only road” sort of deal. Very scenic and peaceful, so not for those who prefer the concrete jungles. I ventured my way to Loch Ness and alas, no monster sighting. The conditions felt perfect for a Nessie sighting, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be. That Loch is a lot larger than I thought it was!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-1272" src="http://www.lifeatwalsh.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/celtic-pics-8-041-300x225.jpg" alt="Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness.

Happy Halloween Weekend!

Although the weather is a bit frigid, I hope everyone has fun this weekend dressing up and celebrating this highly sugar-laden holiday. I do miss trick-or-treating; there should be some way for adults to get free candy too . . .

As it relates to the title of this entry, here is some information that is being added to my professor, Dr. Kim’s blog as part of a Tribal Knowledge assignment.

You can access his blog here: http://walshuniversity.blogspot.com/

1. What are your favorite local restaurants (pizza, wings, chinese, italian, ice cream, etc.)?

Sukho-Thai has amazing food (try the sushi), proper portion sizes and decent prices. I also recommended Bombay Sitar for pretty authentic-tasting Indian food. Other favourites are Macaroni Grill (Italian), 91 Wood Fire Oven, Papa Gyro’s, Bravo’s, Wasabi, and El Rincon (Mexican).

2. Where should I get my haircuts?

Do NOT get it across the street in the Washington Square plaza. That’s all I can tell you as I get my hair cut back home.

3. What’s a good place to take my kids for indoor and outdoor fun?

Price Park has a duck pond and a nice playground and is always filled with other families. There is also bowling, the Dollar Theater, Chuck E. Cheese, and programs at the YMCA.

4. Any recommendations on a physician, dentist, etc?

Unless you would like information on Canadian health care, I can’t really help you here either. It’s fairly easy to Google doctors and dentists, as there are some organized pages online that list practices in North Canton.

5. Where’s the best place to get deals on books, clothes, groceries, ?

Anywhere but Walsh’s bookstore! Amazon.com is great for books, but if you like to shop around in a store atmosphere Borders at the Strip would be a good place. If you have the time, I would make the commitment and drive to Beachwood. It’s a proper mall with great stores. For a great selection for foods, try the Giant Eagle at the Strip. It has much more selection than the one at Washington Square.

6. What do you appreciate most about the area (Northeast Ohio)?

It’s a quiet place that allows me to concentrate on my studies. The community is warm and friendly and very supportive. They are very into sports here and are very involved with community activities.

A warning to students

Student Government has already discussed this and we all find it a pressing issue: Vandalism. Specifically, students coming in and ruining the chairs and tables in the classrooms. I find is very sad that some students have not matured enough to treat their environment with respect. There is no need to bend and pick at the arms of chairs or carve a message into desk tops. Walsh in an amazing University, so please treat it with the respect it deserves. It is a privilege for you to study here and I don’t think some people realize just how lucky they are.

Travel Tips and Tangents

On a cheery side, it is time for more pictures and comments on a global destination! This week: Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow has really cleaned up and is now a great shopping and tourist destination. It is the largest city in Scotland and one of the most populated cities in the United Kingdom. I was very impressed with the shopping options and the mix of traditional and modern found all over the city. I really enjoyed the Mackintosh House and Hunterian Museum. Way ahead of their time, Charles and Margaret Mackintosh turned their Victorian home that they lived in from 1906 to 1914 into a distinctively modern home with designs we would expect to see today. You can check out more information here: http://www.hunterian.gla.ac.uk/collections/art_gallery/mac_house/machouse_index.shtml

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE the Fall! Wonderful weather, brilliant colours, holidays that focus on food and feasting (the best kind of holidays) and Pumpkin-flavoured products everywhere. Life is sweet right now, especially with that little taste of cinnamon and nutmeg

International Events

Cedar Point Trip

It happened! Ten students from the club, both Internationals and Americans, committed a whole Sunday to conquer some amazing roller coasters and rides. I did manage to jump on Dragster again, this time at night, and none of the original thrill was lost. The Internationals who went had a great day and even tried Elephant Ears for the first time. It is always nice to travel outside of campus once in a while to explore the state and give International students different experiences of life in the United States.

International Dinner 2010!

More uniforms! The women will soon be adding a maroon dress to our Spring 2011 collection, in addition to new warm-up jackets that just came in this week. But in slightly more important news, the men made Walsh proud for a second year in a row as doubles partners Pierre La Grange and Gary Innes came in 6th place at the ITA Nationals Tournament in Mobile, Alabama. The boys also went for a day trip to New Orleans (jealous) to visit the French Quarter. Now both teams are enjoying the last few weeks of warm-ish weather before winter settles in.

This year, Student Government is making an effort to become a known entity on Walsh’s campus. The Treasurer has spearheaded a football event for this weekend’s Walsh vs Malone game. We have organized a coach bus to drive 55 students who do not have a car on campus to Fawcett Stadium as well as give them free spirit t-shirts. Come on Walsh, tomorrow LET’S BEAT MALONE!!!!

Since when did we get a bell???!!!

I noticed at the men’s soccer game vs Malone ( a 3-1 victory for Walsh I might add) that there was a Walsh-painted wagon with an old school bell on it. There was a dedicated group of fans watching over it and even rang it when we scored a goal. Where did this mystery bell come from? Am I that behind in Walsh sports? I’m sure it has a story, I may have to dig around for that one.

OK, so I have been holding out long enough and I feel terrible. This week, let’s travel across the Atlantic to Dublin, Ireland:

Dublin is a modern city with a strong International vibe. Although it was clear we were in Ireland (the countless pubs, shamrocks, Celtic music street performers and Guinness ads was a constant reminder), the city was very fast-paced and in a constant state of change. Filled with history, culture and wonderful entertainment, I was lucky to stay for two whole weeks in Dublin at Trinity College. This college was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I and is Ireland’s oldest University. An extremely fun city, especially if one gets into sports, I highly recommend making the journey to the capital city of the famed Emerald Isle.

Hey there Walsh!

With week 3 of classes already over and done with, summer is already starting to feel like a distant memory. The only evidence I have to prove that summer indeed happened is my moderately tanned skin and the scar a certain horse made when she kicked me in the leg. Good thing it isn’t interfering with my tennis performance! Or maybe it is, which would explain a lot . . .

You will be hearing me say “I have been so busy lately” as a new mantra for this year, so I will send out a general disclaimer now: from now until I graduate, I will ALWAYS BE BUSY! I type that with a smile because I truly love how Walsh has inspired me to be so involved on campus. Here are some details on some specifics:

International Events

Ice cream social turns into student displacement

Lat week, the International Student Department and the Multicultural Affairs on campus came together and created a free ice cream bar for students and faculty to enjoy after lunch. A few of us Internationals, tired of being tied to our countries of origin, decided to play around with the world map. Argentinians were moved to Mexico, Australians traveled over to New Zealand, Canadians were scattered across the globe and our only Japanese student moved his country of origin to Oklahoma. The International director was only slightly amused, but it did inspire much conversation between the Internationals and Americans.

Club Fair generates new interest in the club!

A few hours were dedicated to recruiting fresh faces for all of the clubs and organizations here at Walsh. Some are National organizations and others are just getting started, but all of the clubs here at Walsh try to bring people with common interests together. I did get a little too competitive with the American Advertising Association while attracting members and I hope my friend Ryan can forgive me

Tennis time

We have just finished up our Fall season, with our last match against Baldwin Wallace today for the women. Some of our Walsh players went to Michigan this weekend for an ITA tournament. All of our players made a great appearance, most of them making it very far into the draw. A HUGE congratulations to Pierre Le Grange and Gary Innes who won the men’s doubles! Way to go boys, good luck with Nationals in Alabama!

Business Club Bulletin

BCC ran its first fundraiser this weekend. At the Fall Family Weekend, we sold 50/50 tickets as well as tickets to win one of 2 donated prizes. Thank-you to Giant Eagle for a gift card we used to purchase a Fall decoration basket and to Best Buy for a $50 gift card. We will still sell tickets tomorrow and hopefully make a decent profit.

In Other Walsh News . . .

Student Government’s up and running!

This past Thursday was our first official Walsh Student Government meeting of the 2010-2011 year! It was well attended, pretty well organized and very informative to all. President Jusseaume was our guest speaker for the evening and gave us the inside scoop of Walsh’s future plans. My favourite is the creation of an Arts Center this summer to be built where the old tennis courts used to be. I think my first donation as an alumna will be towards this center. Also in the works: a new addition to the library, wireless for Grove (hopefully soon!) and an environmental pavilion in Hoover park. Too bad I’m leaving, Walsh is just starting to get even better!

System down

If we are going to be using Sakai more often for classes, please make sure it is up and running in ship-shape conditions. Computers are a part of our lives, a huge part in this day and age. Hopefully Walsh can fix things soon and get the system’s glitches worked out. My own PC is a different story. I have never met a computer who wishes to end its own life so much.

Random Cats

We have some street-wise cats here at Walsh, and I have no idea where they have come from. Generally friendly, these cats just strut around and hang around the dumpsters, which then generally discourages people from touching them.

Travel Tips and Tangents

As my PC is on the fritz, I have no pictures to readily access. So here is some sound travel advice:

Remember to put toiletries in sealed plastic bags. You never know when your shampoo or shave gel will decide to explode in your luggage (also a precaution when transporting maple syrup, but I may be alone on this one).

On the day of traveling, wear easy to slip on/off shoes, minimal jewelry and nothing in pockets. It makes security checks that much easier.

Always review Mapquest/Google Maps directions. Double check the end destination is correct and avoid the “faster” route with many backroads. Not worth it if one gets lost anyways.

Check in next week when I have pictures to look at again!

Welcome back to Walsh everyone!

And to all of you Freshmen, welcome for the first time. I hope you enjoy all that Walsh has to offer. I myself have really enjoyed the past 3 years here, and am sort of sad to finally be able to say I am a senior. At least this year I can finally justify my “senioritis” when it kicks in around March

This summer was spent in both countries: I interned here in Ohio at Junior Achievement for May and June and went home to work at camp for July and August. In both countries I experienced ridiculous heat, but luckily my Canadian job had access to a nice big pool.

So now I am back and ready to complete my Accounting degree. The workload should be reasonable enough, which will help my endless “to-do list” for all of my clubs and tennis duties. All things considered, Senior year has already been so much fun and, if I may be so bold to say, the best year yet!

International Events

Fun times in Cleveland Today!

I now have a stronger appreciation for this city by the lake. This Labour Day weekend some of the Internationals and their Walsh Ambassadors piled into a rather large van and took off to experience “A Taste of Cleveland”. First we stopped off at our International Administrator’s lovely house for a quick lunch on the patio. Then we piled back into the van and drove down the road to Swings and Things, an amusement park of sorts. Having all of us internationals drive go-karts was, well, interesting. Let’s just say there was no international standards on road rules.

After some arcade games and pathetic prizes (honestly, even as a child I knew I was being ripped off) we again piled back into the van and headed off towards downtown. Keisuke and I opted out of the boat ride and air show as we saw it last year. We went to the Science Center and watched the IMAX movie “Hubble”. Totally worth it. After that we walked to E. 4th street for some deliciousness. We ate at La Strada and were blown away by the quality of out meal. Recommendation: The eggplant appetizer. After we joined up with the group and settled in for a good Train concert. I was very impressed with their live performance, as Patrick proved he did not need fancy editing programs to fine-tune his voice. Wonderful day, wonderful city. Cleveland!

With some of our members away on the Rome Experience trip, the men and women’s teams feel slightly incomplete. However, we are eager to get our fall season underway. I am excited to see our freshmen play and what positions everyone will play. I am the captain for the women this year, and hope to do what I can to make it a fun and fantastic season.

NEW: Business Club Bulletin!

I am the new President of the BCC! Eager to get our club up and running again, I am going to try my best to really make this year as productive and profitable as possible. For anyone who is interested, the BCC (Business and Communications Club) is one of Walsh’s oldest and largest clubs designed for anyone within the School of Business or anyone in the Walsh community who wishes to bring a little business savvy into their lives. For more information on the club, please contact me at juliakole@walsh.edu for more details. See you at our first meeting! (date TBA)

In Other Walsh News . . .

Walsh School of Business introduces new pilot program

New this year to the school of Business is a new curriculum and new set of classes. My brother was lucky enough to be selected for this program and received a sweet piece of technology to use for his classes. I am slightly jealous, but am eager to hear what this new program entails.

New cafeteria: aesthetics get a thumbs up, the food, well . . .

it still needs some work. The new glass wall provides a wonderful view of campus and the David center atrium. The drinks outside of the main food area has cut down on lines. And despite what people say, I personally like the wall that hides the tray return from view. Alas, the food quality still leaves something to be desired.

Wireless everywhere! *almost*

I guess the petition paid off, because Walsh is almost 100% wireless! The Grove apartments are still not hooked up, although some of us can pull a very slow wireless connection from Alexis and Lemmon.

Travel Tips and Tangents

I’m still not done with this section yet! Good thing I didn’t clear my pictures from my computer yet. This week I will go once again to Italy, this week to the city of Tivoli.

Tivoli was a wonderful little town, famous for its Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana. Villa d’Este’s charm was in its fountains in the garden; spectacular works of art and grand examples of master engineering. These fountains ranged in size, from small trickles to dancing ponds to waterfalls. Every corner had its own unique fountain and architecture. Villa Adriana is a massive old Roman ruin, although it was preserved quite well. One could spend hours and hours exploring every building and detail of the property. Great weather just added onto the experience and made for a great trip out of Rome.

Happy Springtime everyone!

Although sometimes it feels like winter, or summer. Typical April weather is what I am trying to say. The weather may be changing but one thing is for certain, ONE MORE WEEK OF CLASSES!!! Get excited.

International Events

Light the Night for Haiti

On March 31st, the International club hosted “Light the Night for Haiti”, a fundraiser to collect funds for the Brothers of Christian Instruction at the Walsh chapel. Most of the international students came to participate and recite poems and prayers in their native languages and listen to others while some played musical instruments to showcase their talents. Brother Marcel gave us all insight on the conditions of Haiti and what the funds would be contributing to. There was even a few Walsh faculty and staff present, one of whom did a fantastic job demonstrating his multi-musical skills. More than $1,000 was raised by this effort, so I would like to say a big thank-you to all who came and supported this worthy cause.

Honors Convocation and Servant Leadership Banquet

Every year around this time Walsh likes to acknowledge students who have been dedicated to achieving high grades and giving back to the school. This year’s convocation was wonderful, with a great performance by the chorale and lots of awards and recognitions to Walsh students, traditional and non-traditional alike. I had not been to the banquet before, but I am assuming that it has always been such a well-attended event. I was happy to see the kind of involvement some students put forth on campus as well as off of it all in the spirit of volunteering. Congratulations to everyone who was recognized that evening, including my fallow Blogger Chris who was chosen as the recipient for the TOWER award

Cleveland Culture

In honor of a friend’s birthday, a few friends and I went up to Cleveland to watch Cirque du Soleil: Allegria. What an amazing performance! The things people can do with their bodies is unreal (mesmerizing/creepy contortionists). The high-flying acrobatics on the trapeze, funky bungee cord and trampolines was out of control. Never have a gasped so dramatically in my life! Afterwards we topped the night off with dinner at P.F. Chang’s. Highly recommended if you are an avid foodie like I am. Delicious.

Wireless petition

Horray! Someone has finally started this! I would love to see wireless installed all across campus, as would the 300+ students who have signed the petition. It would be much more convenient and almost necessary in the technological world of today. Hope this petition makes it through

Student Advisory Board

A new organization at Walsh, the Student Advisory Board (SAB) is a small board of students chosen by the faculty from the School of Business to discuss current topics within the Business program. Our semester of meetings and discussions was met with great success! We will continue to meet next academic year and try and tackle current issues within the program to further benefit all current and incoming Walsh students.

Travel Tips and Tangents

Sorry, no feature this week. But a few tips:

- Plan your trips, but be flexible. Having a tight schedule fit for the military is always prone to changes, so never set plans in stone.

- Pick your travel buddies well. Try to find someone or a small group of people who have similar interests with you. It makes for a more enjoyable experience.

- Not comfortable jumping halfway across the world? Start small. Travel to a major city in your state for the day or stay overnight. It’s amazing the kinds of experiences you can find locally. Or, be a tourist in your own town.

- watch out for gypsies

Last night marked one of the last Open Door Thursdays of the school year; in fact this was one of the last Open Door Thursdays that I will have the chance to attend before graduating in just a couple weeks–a bittersweet time indeed.

Open Door Thursdays!!?? You may be asking yourself what is this event? Well for those of you who are unfamiliar with ODT, it is an event sponsored by Campus Ministry and hosted by Maria Crookston, Megan McQuillen, Caitlin Hoak, and Jessica Russo. These kind-hearted girls open up their room week after week to the entire campus for food, fellowship, and fun! Each week brings about a new menu and theme for the gathering. This past week was Easter themed with a breakfast menu (Pancakes, sausage, bacon) along with Easter treats and prizes for the raffle winners! The talented chefs making the pancakes went a step further to create Easter bunny shaped pancakes (who would have thought?) The food was delicious and I even entered into the drawing—I didn’t win, but the fun I had while attending made up for it!

A group of us enjoying some delicious pancakes!

Thursday seems to be the perfect day for these gatherings, as I always have some time after choir before student government where I just want to relax. I’m sure for many of you by the time Thursday rolls around you could use a little break, even if that just were 10-20 minutes away from your studies. What better way to relax than with friends, great hospitality, and delicious food?! There’s even video games like Guitar Hero and Rockband (just to name a few) to play and unwind for a bit.

Maria Crookston has been in charge of this, along with Miguel Chavez and several Campus Ministry members for several years now, and it’s turned out to be a great success. Each week e-mails and Facebook invites go out campus wide to invite everyone to this event. With guest appearances from faculty, staff, and alumni, there’s always something new and exciting waiting behind the door—although you won’t have to worry about knocking, as it’s always open! The welcoming atmosphere and great hospitality provided is something that makes everyone feel like they are at home—not something you would typically find on a college campus so its worth taking advantage of this opportunity.

The time and dedication put into an event like this goes beyond just a couple hours of Open Door on Thursday nights, it takes planning and organizing to reach the level of success it has today. Without dedicated individuals like Maria and members of Campus Ministry working hard to think up new ideas and diligently sending out invites we would not have this great opportunity. They deserve a lot of thanks for all that they do!

Successful! " width="225" height="300" />
Maria and I came to the conclusion that after 4 years of being friends we never had a pic of just the two of us. Successful!

I look forward to the next couple of Open Door’s before the semester is over, and I encourage all of you to come and check this out: Thursdays, 7-9pm, Stein 9B. “All are welcome!”

Have a great week everyone! At this time of excitement as we can see the end of the semester in site…remember to stay focused, dedicate more time to your studies, and put in the time now—rather than stressing later to make up for lost time.

Take care and God Bless,
