100 Days of Euchre?! I think so!

Hello all! Where to start….

Midterms? Sure! So far my midterms don’t look incredibly horrible or anything, they go as follows:

History of Christianity: Essay test-5 Essays, given in advance, and one may be written before class! :D

annnd….that’s my only official “midterm!” All of my other classes are just exams, and aren’t labeled midterms..so I kind of lucked out!

If any of you guys in the honors program enjoy Euchre (I  keep typing eurchre for some reason), enter yourself and a partner for the tournament on the 16th! Nic Harvey and I might have to take you all down, but it will still be loads of fun! Nic, Natalie, more often than not Zach Thomas, and I have played Euchre for…23 days now…I think it’s 23. We’re shooting for 100 before we take it easier on the cards for a while! I just learned how to play….23 days ago :p It’s a ton of fun, and not hard to learn at all.

I’ve been spending a lot of time on the weekends at home (it’s always awesome to spend time with the family!) taking senior pictures for some kids :) Just this last friday, Seth and I went to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park to take his!

)

One of Seth's favorites, not totally retouched yet :)

I think 90% of the people I come across like the outdoors, and I absolutely LOVE getting out to go backpacking, hiking, whatever! I really urge all of you to grab a buddy and go somewhere like the Cuyahoga Valley National Park this fall. The weather’s been beautiful, and with the leaves changing, the park will be gorgeous. If any of you want information on the park, get a hold of me either on here or on facebook (I always grab a few maps for anyone I might find that’s interested when I go).

Well, I’m going to get a whopping 10 hours of sleep tonight! FINALLY some rest :)

I hope the year is going well for all of you. Talk to you in a week!

Finally Catching a Bug…

Hey everyone! I was wondering how long it would take for me to catch a cold on campus…well..the answer to that is 5 weeks lol. Nothing major, probably just from the drastic weather changes we’ve been having. Irrelevant!

This past week at Walsh University has been an eventful one as usual. Where to start….Meet the Brothers!

The Brothers of Christian Instruction met with students at Walsh last week

The Brothers of Christian Instruction met with students at Walsh last week

I’m not sure who sponsored/advertised it (maybe campus ministry?), but the Brothers of Christian Instruction met with whoever wanted to come in the Lobby of Betzler Tower :) Although I couldn’t stick around, many of the students had only spectacular things to say about what the Brothers had to say to them :)

FAMILY FUN WEEKEND!

A lot of events were offered this weekend at Walsh’s campus. A lot of students’ families came to visit (Sarah’s parents came all the way from Canada!)

There was a carnival with games, prizes, Entertainment, Breakfast with the President (for the parents), Pancakes on Parade (Pancake competition), and don’t forget the fireworks!

There were some pretty awesome fireworks Saturday night on campus. I hope you were there to see them!

Saturday night my parents came up and took me out to dinner. It’s always nice to see them. Even though I don’t live very far away, I’ll admit that I am a homebody. I enjoy vacationing and stuff, but it’s nice to have the comfort of going home whenever I need to. Living on my own, I’ve learned a lot about the crap that my mom puts up with. She’s a clean freak (sorry mom), but I get that gene from her a little bit. When I’m on my own I like things to be neat and organized, but when I’m at home everything is usually taken care of for all of us in my family. Being away from home has made me really grateful, and I suggest that all of you guys that have come from a similar home to mine, tell your parents thanks. It will mean a lot. (Love you mom+dad)

Ok, sappy moment is done.

Sorry that this post has been so scatterbrained…I just wrote things as they came to mind. I hope all of you are having a great time at Walsh, I know I certainly am!

Walsh=A Perfect Fit.

Hey Everyone! I would have written this on Sunday, but Lemmon Hall’s internet WOULD be out this weekend, haha. I’d like to give you all a brief synopsis of my classes so far. Synopsis may not be the best word to use (I just had a little conversation with my roommate about it actually :p )….anyway!

MWF: 9:10-10:10_Honor’s-History of Christianity. Where to start…I won’t describe the classes…seeing as how that’s pretty understandable from their titles. Dr. Gerber teaches this on the first floor of Lemmon, and I’ll say IN CLASS this class captivates me. I am a born again christian and definitely public about it, definitely evangelical. So I always want to learn more about Christianity. However, outside of class it’s hard for any of us to find the motivation to read the 1,000 page textbook/historical documents. We have been pulling together to form support groups though, and it’s gonna get a lot easier!

10:20-11:30_BIO 209 Lecture. Dr. Caplea has given me a wake up call on how much I’m going to need to study in college. I think her class is going to be TOUGH!….probably my toughest..but you can tell that she really knows what she’s doing, and I’d definitely rather have a professor that knows what they’re doing than a professor that I doesn’t…I want to walk away knowing a lot more than I did when I went in…that’s definitely going to happen in this class, as much as I know I’ll have to study…

11:30-12:30_CHEM 109 Lecture. Everybody knows somebody who couldn’t hurt a fly, and would help anyone as much as they needed, but can still maintain strict programming. Dr. Lupica is just that person. He’s offered to put together group study sessions outside of class…he definitely doesn’t have to do that. I will be honest, I learned things in high school chem that I’ve taken to this class…and do some things a bit differently, but he makes it very easy to comprehend in the way he covers material.

12:40-1:40_ GE 100-Monday only. The only thing I can say about this class is that I have the coolest instructor ever! (TK I hope your’e reading this!) Haha, but I can’t really say much about the class because TK was out last week with an injury and labor day caused another day without class…but I’m definitely not complaining!

TR: 8:00-10:00_ BIO 209 lab-Tuesday only. The first day of my bio lab class, I kind of just wanted to get up and leave, because I was very unprepared. I hadn’t printed off Dr. Underwood’s slideshow, so I tried taking notes over every slide…yeah right! That didn’t last long, but I went back to my hall and printed off the slideshow and had my first test today…I can say that I feel pretty good about it. He covers the material well.

8:00-11:00_CHEM 109 lab-Thursday only. I’ve only had this lab once, so I can’t say much about it…but so far, so good I suppose. I felt good about the first lab, but Tuesday’s group didn’t do so hot, so I’m not sure what to expect….I’ll find out in a few days…yikes!

11:30-1:00_PSYC 110. Skip Koff….what a professor! He’s a hoot! He makes class very enjoyable. The primary focus of this class is adjustment, and we cover a lot of contemporary issues/interesting topics. Check out Skip’s car!

Enough said!

Enough said!

3:30-5:00_Choir. I. LOVE. CHOIR. It’s nice to be in a choir that people actually want to be in-not just kids looking for an easy A. I learned so much in just the first 15 mins. of class…crazy! I hope you can all make it to our first concert! Look for us Thursday outside the Chapel at some point….we’re gonna try to throw together a song! :D

On a different note….Aaron Cooksey. Aaron came to our school to speak about making good decisions. He was unlike any motivational speaker I’ve heard before. He said himself, “I won’t tell you not to drink and drive or do this or that…just stand up if you promise to make the next best choice.” Everyone in the Barrett Center stood. It was such a powerful presentation. A lot left in tears, a lot (including myself) with eyes welled and ready to burst. If you didn’t go to his presentation, I’m sorry you missed it. He touched everyone in the room Thursday night. I can only pray that what he said makes its way into the hearts and minds of all of us.

Aaron Cooksey told students at Walsh a story they'll never forget...

So far, Walsh University is everything I expected and more….way more. I feel so at home!

Study habits, wings, and running…what?

Hey Everyone! I’d like to apologize for such a short and general post last week. To be honest, I was wrong when I said the adjustment was going really well. It’s just….mediocre. I absolutely LOVE college and meeting everyone and having an awesome time with all the kids in my hall and the other halls, but I may be having an awesome time too often, you know? I came to the realization today that I need to set aside more time for schoolwork and less time for play. On the surface that may sound totally boring, but when you think about it…it’s not that bad. Sure, instead of playing xbox that extra hour with everyone I can go read for my History of Christianity class or A&P/Chem. Is something like that horrible? Absolutely not. It’s just something that all of us freshmen should consider. I’m sure some of you guys have your study habits down, but for most of us….we don’t. Instead of trying to figure it out on your own, talk to someone who knows what they’re doing. Time management is going to be key for survival here :p

As for my classes, they seem to be pretty awesome. A review of those are coming later, once I have a better idea of the instructor and class as a whole :)

I’m absolutely amazed at all of the activities the campus provides! Honestly, the comedian was hysterical! My face hurt from laughing too hard. Then the Spread Your Wings event….delicious! For those of you who missed it, you missed out on some awesome wings.

Students at Walsh having a delicious time at the “Spread Your Wings” social event!

For those of you who were at the Cross Country meet yesterday morning, thank you for supporting the team! The Cavs finished second overall, and Justin Eddy (just a freshman!) finished third! What an awesome run so early in the year! Congratulations to all of the runners. (Pictured above is Joakim Frisk, a freshman from Sweden)

Good luck to all of you with your first full week of classes!

Tyler :)

Also, feel free to give me some feedback in the comments section! Is there anything you’d like to ask/hear about?

Week one of College…Done.

Hey everyone! Well…moving in went really well. I love everyone on my floor in Lemmon Hall! They’re all a hoot :p

I’m sure most of the other freshmen didn’t really know what to expect in regard to classes in college..I know I didn’t! This semester I’ll be taking the History of Christianity, Bio209 lecture, Bio209L, Chem109 lecture, Chem109L, GE100, Psychology of Adjustment, and Chorale. I know a lot of freshmen became really overwhelmed during the first week, but I think I kept my cool as well as I could have. Sure, my classes were tough, and I bet they’ll only get harder, BUT as long as we can stick together and help each other out, we’ll be ok. MAN did that sound corny! Seriously though, I think we need to help each other improve study habits, and support each other-whether that means telling someone to turn off the xbox or telling them that it’s time to take a break and actually play xbox-because we all need to have fun too!

Now that we’ll be starting to adjust to college, we’re going to get curious about what’s in the surrounding area (besides a Giant Eagle and Hoover Park!) so as the year progresses, I hope to key everyone in on some places I visit…it may be restaurants, stores, the “frolf” course, or anything else! Feel free to share as well!

I wish everyone the best of luck with their classes during week 2!

Have a wonderful Labor Day!

An informal introduction :)

My name is Tyler Cosma, and I’m from the charming little town of Salem, Ohio. Salem really isn’t home to a whole lot…other than a pretty cool Walmart. Regardless, I’m at Walsh University to major in nursing!

My main hobbies include: Track, Soccer, Photography, Hiking/Backpacking, and Magic (in the slight-of-hand sense).

Track: I’ve run track since my 8th grade year, but unfortunately had to sit out my sophomore year due to a broken leg. However, my senior year my 4×200 relay team got second at the state track meet for division 2! I ended up running the 200 in 21.6 seconds!…and I just realized that probably doesn’t mean much to anyone, sooo moving on..

Soccer: I’ve played soccer ever since I can remember. I love the game, but haven’t done anything extraordinary in my time playing. I’m just a kid that loves pick up games on a Sunday afternoon.

Photography: Ok…Photography=Love for me. It’s a recent hobby that I picked up just this year, but I’ve already won regional competitions, as well as a photo contest at Malone College (Walsh’s Rival!). I was the only high school participant, but ended up winning every category as well as best overall photo! I hope to take photos for Walsh to some degree or another, whether it be athletics or just candid shots.

Hiking/Backpacking: I spend most of my free days outside, and go on a few backpacking trips during every season of the year. Whether it be an 8 Mile overnighter or a 45 Mile five day trip, it’s great to have the skill set to survive in the middle of nowhere with everything needed for the trip on my back!

Magic: I’ve been a magician for over 10 years. I specialize in close-up magic, such as cards, coins, the occasional fire illusion, etc. However, I have the equipment to pull off a pretty decent stage show as well. I’ve worked for audiences from 4 (in a restaurant setting) to well over 100 people. It’s an exciting hobby that never gets old.

Now that you know a little bit about me, I’d like to say that I’m incredibly excited to share my college experience with all of you this year! Until next week–

Tyler Cosma :)
