Class of 2014
Nursing

Welcome to Walsh, Class of 2015!

I can’t believe my first year is already over! It feels like just yesterday I was getting lost going to class….but I don’t want to sound old, so I’ll get on with it!

I wanted to update you guys with what my life will be like this year:

Roommates…I could go on for days about how awesome my roommates are this year! I’m living with Zach Thomas, Nic Harvey, and Dominic Coloucy. We’re living in Lemmon Hall, and I can’t wait to see what the year has in store for all of us…Zach, Nic, and I love to cook! Dominic can do Easy Mac…I think :p but I’ll try to keep you posted on some of our dishes.

Classes:

Here we goooo…
Pathophysiology–is likely to be my most difficult course this semester. In patho I’ll learn about how different illnesses change the functions of systems in the body…so I look forward to it being very interesting, but it will be difficult too!

Nursing/Health Assessment–is going to be a very informative class, but I feel that most of the material is common sense once it’s explained…it’s going to deal with the actual practices of a nurse (blood pressure-and other physical tasks, as well as the psychology behind nursing care).

Pharmacology–is going to be awesome! My advisor is my instructor, and she’s amazing. I’ve never had a professor say that they allow texting in class…until now! I think there’s going to be a lot of studying and work in this class (about medications), but she makes class incredibly enjoyable!

Psychology of Human Development–is going to be fun. Dr. H is a hilarious individual, and makes that 8AM class fly by. Not only is the material practical and useful, but it’s very interesting as well!

Chorale–those of you that followed my posts last year know how I feel about chorale…I LOVE IT! I was given the opportunity to travel to Italy with the Chamber Singers this past summer (more to come on that later), but what an awesome experience under an awesome director!

Honors World Literature–is actually pretty fun (despite the name!)..Dr. Modarelli has been at Walsh two years, and he’s very easy to relate to and talk to in class. We’re studying ancient literature, like The Iliad and The Odyssey, but they’re pretty enlightening if you ask me!

Well…that’s my first semester so far in a nutshell…I’m sure that I’ll keep you updated with my classes and review them/professors later.

I’d like to extend a helping hand to any freshmen that have questions (especially nursing majors!) for me about Walsh, the programs, or anything else. I’m pretty easy to find. Lemmon Hall isn’t very big :) and my number is 330-853-3247.

Center for the Arts!!

Looks pretty good, doesn’t it? After starting to develop a strong arts program, Walsh University will be commencing the construction of the new Center for the Arts this semester (after all..we are an liberal arts university). Students, faculty, and staff will have full use of the facility by January 2012 or earlier!

When you walk in, what will you see? The building is built on several tiers (pretty neat if you ask me), so the atrium is very unique. It will be space for students to exhibit their work. It will also be a laboratory for museum studies majors, and a reception space for events and the Alumni Arena. Take a look!

Don’t you love the fake people? :p Everyone will rehearse in one multipurpose rehearsal hall. By everyone I mean the chorale, band, dance, and drama groups. The rehearsal hall will be nearly 2900 square feet! Holy smokes! It will have some stage lighting for “intimate performances” and recording equipment. It will also include adjustable acoustic drapes…who does that? I guess us, but it’s awesome! Here’s what the hall will look like:

What about our artists on campus? And possibly even photographers? (I’m hoping!) There’s an art studio too! What does an awesome art studio include? Let me tell you! First off, natural lighting-very important. It will also have vaulted ceilings to add that “artistic touch” to it. Concrete floor (an interesting touch), Blackboards (not dry-erase) and Homesote for hanging art that the students create…and of course it will include sinks and plenty of storage room. Again, let’s take a look!

The building is approximately 13,000 square feet total, so there’s plenty of other things taking up space. In addition to what we’ve talked about above, there will also be 2 classrooms, 3 music practice rooms (I’m really excited about that), and 7..count ‘em…7 offices! Rumor has it that some of these offices will also serve as practice rooms in the beginning. The building will also have plenty of storage space, both within its own walls as well as in the Cecchini Wellness Center, as it is connected to it.

A few students that I’ve talked to are disappointed in the fact that it doesn’t include a large concert hall/auditorium…but for our Spring Concert (April 15th..save the date!) we are totally transforming the Alumni Arena…we’ll have a stage area and a shell…and plenty of seating!

It’s a very exciting time for Walsh University. With building this center, they will be fulfilling their mission as a liberal arts institution, offer community outreach, recruitment, and further connecting to Catholic identity.

It’s time to get excited! If you have any questions, let me know!

Until next time,

Tyler :)

Cavs Basketball/DISCOVER!

Hello there! While it’s been a while since I’ve posted, I’ve got some big news! Walsh University Women’s Basketball is currently 21-4. They’ve been playing very well this season! The Men’s team is 26-0…and number one in the country! I don’t know what I’d do if the basketball team won a national championship my freshman year!

I was lucky enough to photograph the men and women as they faced our rivals, Malone University Two weeks ago. The women won 67-36. Below are a few photos from the game.

Some of the students really embraced the White-Out Theme!

Photos from the mens game:

During half time, they had a wing eating contest!!

The men won 99-63. This was the first basketball game I’ve ever photographed, and what fun it was! Keep cheering on your cavaliers and let’s hope they get another national championship!

Switching over to the other side of the fence…Discover 2011. Discover is an all-freshman retreat for one weekend that is help in hope that the freshman there will discover themselves: who they are and what they stand for. It did just that. There were a lot of tears shed during the weekend, and while I can’t go into too much detail for future Walsh freshman reading this, I can say that there are limited spots (approx. 60), so if you can go, GO. It was the most powerful weekend of my life, and I made so many new friends…true friends. Friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life.  The retreat was held at Camp Aldersgate in Carrolton, OH. If you have any questions, I’ll answer what I can!

Posts in the future: What would you guys like to hear?

Until next time,

Tyler :)

Cutting Open Cats and Photography!

Hello all! During my last post, I didn’t review all of my classes because I hadn’t had much time in a few of them, but they’re definitely great!

Honors English: Dr. John Kandl- This class is going to be interesting…not in a bad way though. Dr. Kandl really knows what he’s doing. He’s a great professor :) We’re studying William Blake…HE’S an interesting fellow. A poet from the 18th century I believe…he wrote some really beautiful poetry, but also some really…crazy poetry. Stuff that hasn’t made sense to myself and my classmates yet, but over time I think we’ll get the hang of understanding his personality and style. Google William Blake and you’ll see where I’m coming from.

MUS239418234984 (I don’t remember the number..): Dr. Britt Cooper- This is a night class that the chamber choir has to take because of our trip to Rome in June…(yay!) The first week was cancelled because Dr. Cooper’s wife had their first child…he’s so happy to be a father! :) Oh right, back to the class…it’s about collective song, and how America sucks at it. Countries all around the world embrace in collective song (outside of church, choirs, and the occasional “Take Me Out To the Ball Game”) but in America, television (American Idol and the like) kind of….intimidate people from wanting to sing their heart out. (That was last week’s lecture) It’s going to be an awesome class!

Bio210L: Dr. Ann Caplea- This is one of my favorite times of the week. In this semester’s anatomy lab, we’re dissecting cats (don’t worry, I won’t post any photos of this :p )…but it’s so interesting to see the muscles of the body and how intricate they are. It’s kind of inspired me to want to be a surgeon again (childhood dream).

Outside of my classes, I just received some great news today! I entered an international photography contest, and one my photos (out of 5 entered) has been selected as a finalist!

Wish me luck in the final round!

Any suggestions for future posts? Comment or get a hold of me on facebook!

Until Next Time,

Tyler :)

Back in the swing

It’s been a long time since I’ve last posted, but wow did I have a wonderful break! Christmas is always wonderful with our family :) as I’m sure it is with every family. It was really nice to be able to catch up with a lot of people and have time to rest! That last week of finals took it out of me!

The semester is officially underway as of Monday January 10th…and so far, I feel like it’s going to be a great semester! I have nearly all of my classes with my roommate, which really helps because we’ll have each other as support…and it makes getting together for projects that much easier :p

First Impressions:

NURS220: Dr. Sherrie Underwood/Dr. Naug- These two professors are co-teaching this course, and during week one, we’ve had a class with both, as well as two classes with only one of them…and they’re really clear. They make the information easy to understand. I have a feeling that I’m really going to like this course (Nursing Ethics)

BIO210 (AnatomyII): Dr. Adam Underwood- I had the privilege of having Dr. Underwood as my AnatomyI lab instructor, and now I have him for lecture. As of week one, I feel like this course is going to go really well! I’m definitely more interested in learning about muscle systems rather than some of the things we covered in AnatomyI.

HON103: Dr. John Kandl- This is my honors english course for the semester. I’ve only had one class…and it was short, so there will be more to come about this in the future, but Dr. Kandl seems like the kind of professor that will make class interesting and really get out imaginations going!

Chem110: Dr. Nisreen Nusair- When I signed up for class, I had upperclassmen telling me that Dr. Nursair would be hard to understand sometimes, both in the sense of material and dialect, but I strongly disagree. She presents the material as clear as day and nobody in the class has had to ask for something to be repeated. Dr. Nusair presents the material in a very simple way, but not in a way that would make students feel like they’re in elementary school. I really like her style of teaching, and am looking forward to this class this semester.

Choir: Dr. Britt Cooper- This is a repeat, but let me just say that I love Dr. Cooper! He’s incredibly talented, and  has a lot to offer to the students in Choir. Come to the spring Concert! I’ll have more details later.

Next time I’ll review three more classes :)

I hope everyone has a great semester! Comment with suggestions for future posts!

Finally, Finals are Finished!

Hey everyone! I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a blog, but it’s been super hectic here at school. I can’t believe the semester is already over! A professor told me back in September that once we hit October, the rest of the semester just flies by…he was right! I felt like everything was dragging in the beginning, but then everything was over before I could blink!

Before I got to college, everybody and their brother would tell me how incredibly hard finals were…kinda freaked me out. Normally I’d say don’t give in to the hype, but with this it’s a different story. Firstly, my anatomy final was horrid. Dr. Caplea uses the national final from the Anatomy and Physiology Association…and I wasn’t prepared. At all. I thought I was, but more studying was necessary. Other than anatomy, it wasn’t the fact that my finals were hard, it was that I had tests every day, which required a ton of studying of multiple subjects days and days prior to every exam. It didn’t help that the week before finals week was full of exams as well :(

On a better note, our choir concerts were on December third and fourth, and if you didn’t make it out to see the performance…your really missed an awesome time! I’ve never been involved with, or witnessed a better choir performance. The chamber singers will continue to sing this week at various locations around Canton…TONIGHT at 7PM we’ll be at ST. MICHAEL’S in Canton, and FRIDAY DECEMBER 17th at 7PM we’ll be at ST. SEBASTIAN’S in AKRON, if you can make it, please attend and support your fellow students!

GO OUTSIDE! (random, right?) At home or at Walsh, take the time now that we have some snow to bundle up and go for a walk, and take a camera with you! I went over to Hoover Park the other night around 9PM and got this shot…since I still can’t post photos…not sure why, I’ll give you the link.

I have to admit that I am a “Christmas Freak”…so this month, although a little stressful has been nothing short of awesome. I get so giddy when I see towns and stores putting up decorations, and when we put up the Christmas tree I get pumped! My Christmas “switch” always gets flipped at a random time every year, and it got flipped early this year. Forget Happy Holidays…I’d like to wish all of you a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WALSH!

November 17, 1960….Walsh’s first day of classes began…with less than 100 students…50 years later, Walsh has 2,935 students enrolled (2009), 51 majors, while still maintaining a 15-1 student:faculty ratio!

I was trying to upload a photo I took of the David Campus Center, but the site won’t let me…so just imagine a photo of the David Center…here!

Students enjoyed an awesome birthday celebration for Walsh on Wednesday the 17h, with very delicious meals and a stunning performance by the chamber singers at mass :)

Although it’s been a long time coming (some senior say that they started celebrating the 50th during their freshman year), it has finally arrived! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WALSH! Here’s to many years to come!

Walsh University recently put on performances of The Pajama Game at the North Canton Playhouse. I was leery at first…I thought it was going to be mediocre at best, but was I wrong! They did a fantastic job! The show couldn’t have been better really. I’d like to congratulate the players on a job well done! Members of the cast included: Ryan Carrier, David Eaton, Michele Thomas, Paige Kreye, Kyle Dillon, Kathy Rosa, Melanie Stone, and others!

Thanksgiving was last Thursday…and this year I have a lot to be thankful for. Everyone always says, “I’m thankful for my family and friends.” I’m saying and definitely meaning it. I love everyone in my life, and without my family, brothers in boy scouts, and friends, I don’t know where I’d be. I haven’t had a horrible life by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m very grateful for that, but I’ve had some times in my life where I had felt helpless, like I had nobody to turn to…but my family and friends were there. Thank you guys, I love you :)

None of my photos could load…I’ll email my “boss” and see why.

Until Next Time!

Tyler! :)

New Faces of…Cheese?

Hello everyone! It’s been an exciting few weeks at Walsh! I’d like to point out two events in particular that happened on campus, first…

New Faces of America is “about what it is like for college students to live and thrive in a multicultural America.” As described by Will & Company, the Los Angeles-based theatrical troupe which created the piece, the show is “a perfect event for people to discuss current diversity and social issues in America. We present characters taken from real interviews of seven people with incredibly different backgrounds.”

New Faces of America tells the stories of:

• Female Biracial College Student
• Southern Gay Minister
• Young Female Veteran from the Iraq War
• Native American Teenager
• Young Migrant Worker
• Appalachian College Student

I think that the performance allowed students to step back and take a less prejudiced view on diversity on campus. For some students, I’m sure they were just there for GE100 (Freshman Focus) and they didn’t care, but for others…I know it made them think again before judging that “gay guy” or “hillbilly.” I believe that other campuses (with much more diversity), not only Walsh, should allow “New Faces” to perform as well.

The second event I’d like to talk about is Walsh’s own Improv ‘n Cheese. Have you ever watched “Who’s line is it anyway?” with Drew Carrey? If you have, then you should have been at the Improv show on Friday night! Walsh’s own students had the crowd falling off of their seats (at least I was falling off of mine!) laughing hysterically! I’m always leery about going to events where someone else’s goal is to make me laugh…but after Friday, I’ll be at every Improv show for the rest of the year!

A few Walsh students during one of the improv skits!

I’ll try to post the schedule of future improv dates soon.

Until Next time,

Tyler :)

Lalalala….CHOIR!

Hey guys :) Today I’ll be talking about my experiences in the chorale and chamber choir here at Walsh. It’s so nice to be involved in a choir where people actually want to be there as opposed to people looking for an easy A (like in high school). Don’t get me wrong, I loved high school choir and chamber choir; I had an awesome director! I learned a lot about my voice in high school, and I’m continuing that vocal education now. I love singing. I always have. If I didn’t care if I annoyed my hall-mates, I’d sing my heart out every night in my room, but I escape to other facilities for that!

Singing in the choir and chamber choir here is SO gratifying. I feel like I learn more and everybody gets better during every rehearsal. I’ll try to make this as least-conceited as possible, but we sang at a mass for our first performance, and we sounded good! Haha. Hopefully you can make to the Christmas concert on December 3rd/4th!

While we’re on the subject of music, the Walsh UPB (university programming board) is taking leaps and bounds with their programming! I don’t know what it’s been like in the past, but this first semester has been packed with events! This past Tuesday, we were all treated to a performance by Natalie Gelman. She is one of the most talented vocal performers I’ve heard in a live setting. She was incredible. I was able to swing by and photograph the event.

Jeff Ondracek opened for Natalie Gelman on Tuesday night, and what a wonderful job he did!

Natalie had a voice comparable to the hit singers we listen to on the radio every day!

I hope you make it to the game room next Tuesday for Walsh UPB’s next featured singer!

Until next time!

Busy, busy, busy!….not what any freshman can expect.

Everyone always tells you that you’re in for a rude awakening when you come to college. They aren’t kidding. I didn’t believe it either, but my first few test scores reflect that I didn’t prepare myself at all. I have some serious work to do…work that’s hard, and not fun, but very rewarding. When I get an A on my next anatomy test, I’ll be sure to let you all know! :) …but I have some serious prepping to do before then!

Life at Walsh couldn’t be better (the only way it could be better would be if I could change a few of the grades I got)…regardless….I love it here. I love everything about Walsh! My roommate Zach Thomas and I were kind of born to be roommates :) I’m happy with how he and I got put together (even though we did request it). There’s also a Swede and Canadian in my room :) It’s so awesome being able to have such diversity in Lemmon Hall!

Euchre is still going strong…Nic and I keep dominating the competition…take a look at Natalie after her loss to us tonight!

She’s such a sore loser! and a sore winner….she’s sore no matter how she fairs in the game!

If anybody wants to challenge Nic and I, please let me know :) for now…I’m off to dominate anatomy

Goodnight!

Tyler :)

PS-I’d like to give a shout-out to Nic’s mom! Hopefully I’m able to make a visit with your son soon!
