Small names… Big voices

Many different events happen each year at Walsh. They range from sports games to movies, dinners, to festivals. One of my favorite events to attend though is the Coffeehouse Artists. Every couple weeks, UPB brings in a musical group or artist to perform for the students. Most of the time, they are not big well known names, but after attending the event you wish you had known about them before. We have had several so far this year, but a few have been my favorite. The three that stand out in my mind have all happened in the past 2-3 weeks.

First to arrive to Walsh’s campus was Natalie Gelman. Natalie was amazing to listen to! She also was really nice and interactive with the crowd. You could see the excitement and passion she got from performing. Natalie sang for about an hour and a half just her amazing voice and her guitar. That is one of the cool things about the Coffeehouse Artists. They do not require a full band behind them. Normally, it is just them playing the guitar or piano, and sometimes they are backed up by someone on drums or bass. Afterwards, Natalie hung around and talked with people for at least an hour. She was really personable and easy to talk to. To learn more about her and hear some of her music, go to her facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/NatalieGelmanMusic or her homepage: http://nataliegelman.com/fr_home.cfm

The next coffeehouse artist was my favorite so far this year. His name was

Nathan Angelo and his enthusiasm and happiness spread throughout the crowd like wildfire. He interacted with the crowd andmade jokes regardless of whether he got responses or not. He just looked and acted as if he was having the time of his life playing the piano, singing, and performing for us. He sounded a lot like a mix of Maroon 5 and Gavin Degraw. Like Natalie, he too was a lot of fun to talk to afterwards. Go to  http://www.nathanangelo.com/ to keep tabs on him :)

The final musical group to come to Walsh so far this semester was SONOS. SONOS came and performed last night for the Walsh Community and the North Canton community. They are an a cappella group who are amazing. They sing modern songs along with some older songs. It still amazes me the sounds that people can make and how they manipulate the talents of multiple people to make it sound like an entire band! My favorite person was the beatboxer Ben. He was so talented and amazing. The show was amazing to watch and listen too.

Till next time :)

The Rivalry comes to Walsh

The past couple weeks have been exciting at Walsh. Sports fans all come together this time of year, every year to watch the rivalry games between Walsh and Malone. The first rivalry game to come to campus was

Me and Kathleen

for Men’s Soccer. A few of my friends and I went to the game to cheer the guys on. I have a few friends on the soccer team so it is always enjoyable to go and watch a game, but this one the fans were filled with electricity. Fans were allowed to sit on the track this time instead of just in the stands. It allowed for a much more up close and personal type of feel. We cheered on the guys, Walsh scoring once during the first half, Malone zero. By the end of the game, Walsh had scored 3 goals, and Malone only scored once. I left after halftime because it was so cold outside and I had a bunch of homework to do, but still, the air was tense and the crowd was rowdy during the first. When Walsh finally scored, Walsh fans cheered and screamed for a good five minutes. Everyone was having so much fun! I can

only imagine how the second half went. Good job guys! The following weekend was another rivalry game. This time it was football. Our football team has been playing well this year and this game was sure to be a big one. UPB, an organization I am a part of, put on a tailgate before the game. They had a ton of food and games. Custom T-shirts were made and students could buy them. Along with them, they could put on temporary tattoos to enhance their “Walsh gear.” From what I heard, everything was a big success. Walsh won too! 24-21! Walsh’s sports team have been having a lot of success this fall season! Lets hope they all keep it up! Basketball season is just around the corner, with only 4 or 5 weeks left of school until winter break. It should be another exciting season!!! Get ready!

A Haunting at Hoover

On October 15th, Walsh’s Black Student Union, UPB, and Science Club put on an event over at Hoover park. For the past few years, BSU has been putting on a haunted house in the Barrette Center. But this year, they wanted to go bigger, so a few organizations joined in to help. The event was a great success! Instead of just a haunted house, it was a haunted trail. The event was open to Walsh students as well as the community. Admission was $3 or 3 canned food products.  We raised over $200 and over 200 cans of food!!!! The money and donations were given to The Refuge of Hope Meal Ministry in North Canton.

Me, Katy and Courtney all dressed up

Anyways, the trail was awesome! It started in the main dance hall, which we turned into a maze, complete with dead ends and loops. People dressed up were stationed throughout the maze to scare. From where I was stationed later in the trail, you could hear the screams coming from the maze. From the maze, you then proceeded to another room, which was converted into a clown room. Here, the members of the clubs trapped you in a room with clowns. From what I heard, they had come up with a sort of show to put on when guests were trapped in. Of course, it was not a fun show. Again screams could be heard everywhere. From the clown room, you went to another room, called the serial killer room. Members dressed up as several well known serial killers from scary movies. There were strobe lights and decorations. I know two members from UPB (the organization I am a part of) dressed up as killer nurses. They looked really creepy and had fake needles and other instruments. I would have been freaking out being in this room. Finally, from the houses, you walked down towards the woods. This is where I was stationed. There were several parts to this part of the trail. First, the guests had to walk over a bridge, where two people we hiding and would jump out. Then there was a funeral scene, followed by zombies that

The scary nurses!

would chase after you. The last part of the trail was in a field where guys with chain-saws were. Finally, if you made it through the trail, coffee and apple cider awaited you. It took a lot of hard work and dedication from the members, but overall the Haunting at Hoover was a huge success. The costumes and makeup of all the participants looked great! Keep an eye out for it next year to make sure you come! Its for a good cause and a lot of fun! Till next time!

Time Management is Key!

Hey all,

Sorry its been a little while since I last wrote. Things have been absolutely crazy here. I have a few pretty big projects coming up in the near future and its about time I started working on them :)

Over the past few weeks, I have had my first tests in just about all my classes. No worries, while some would be worrying about them, I passed them with no problem. I am really enjoying the classes I have, so I am sure that helps. Having a class where you actually do not mind paying attention is helps when it comes to test time because you already absorbed most of the information and its just a matter of refreshing it.

I also have decided what I am going to do for my Junior Honors Project. I am doing my project in conjunction with my Gender psychology class. Dr. Kim Metz teaches that class so she will be my advisor for it. I am going to take a look at differences in mental processes between males and females. My main focus will be towards the motivation aspect of the mind. I want to further this project for my senior thesis, so I think taking a look at the motivation aspect of genders and then applying it to performance in physical activity as well as rehabilitation will be really interesting. For those who do not know, the JHP is a project equivalent to a 15-20 page paper. Lucky for me that is what I am doing. I will be doing a lit review of past studies and research done and write 15-20 pages. FUN!! It is just going to take a lot of time management to be able to get everything else done.

This semester is flying by! I cannot believe that is midterm time already and that fall break is this weekend!! Speaking of which, the golf team isdriving down to Tennessee to play in our last tournament. Another thing I cannot believe, golf season is almost over. We have done well at our last two tournaments. My family came to one a few weeks ago. It was so good to see them. Then we played in another one this past weekend. It was a preview for our conference. We took second after a come back the second day. The spring is looking promising!!! Well, I better be getting ready for class :) Have a good week!

TIll next time!

Andrew Belle at Walsh!

This past week Coffeehouse Artist Andrew Belle came to Walsh University to put on a show for the students. For Grey’s Anatomy Fans, some of his songs were featured in episodes this past spring, including the insane Season Finale! His music has been included in 90210.

Opening up for Andrew was Walsh’s own Katy Collins! Katy is a junior Business major. She is in the honors program as well as on the Golf team with me and is a great singer! Katy plays guitar along with her singing. She performed six songs on Tuesday night. She mostly does covers, but her last song was one that she had written herself. It was amazing! Everyone seemed to love her!

Me, Andrew, and Katy

Andrew then performed for about an hour or so. His songs were sadder songs with upbeat music. It was nice to sit back and relax and listen. It was an hour or so where we didn’t have to think about class or homework or tests. We could just enjoy the show.

A Week of Fun!

Hey All!

So I must say that this week has been pretty exciting for me here at Walsh University. Why? Let me tell you…

On Monday and Tuesday, Walsh Women’s Golf Team held their own invitational at Sanctuary Golf Course. It was a very successful tournament. Walsh’s A Team took first place!!! And the B Team took 3rd! It was a good showing by all! We had four players place in the top 5 too! I played well, shooting 82-79, for medalist honors. I was followed closely by Abbey Kimar and Nikki Kulasa who tied for second, and Kelsey Ozanich took 5th.

Then Tuesday night, I decided to attend Kickboxing for the first time. Tuesday and Thursday nights there is a kickboxing class offered for an hour. It is led by one of Walsh’s own DPT students. IT WAS SOO MUCH FUN! I LOVED IT! It was a great way to get some physical activity in. I was even hurting a little in the shoulders the next day from some of the strength building stuff. There were about 30-40 girls who attended the class. A group of us definitely plan on going every week. Come on out if you have free time!

THEN… on Thursday night, one of my best friends here at Walsh Nikki (also on the golf team) and I decided to go to the Rascal Flatts concert at Blossom. It was such a last minute decision, but also such a great one! We had so much fun and the concert was amazing! I love Rascal Flatts and their music, and to hear them up close and personal at a concert has been something I wanted to do for a long time! I am so glad we went!

Finally, Friday night a group of my closest friends and I decided to make dinner and have a girls night. I am living in the Grove Apartments this year and having a kitchen is amazing! We made a spinach salad with almonds, feta, and strawberries. Then we also had chicken alfredo with homemade sauce (yum!) and garlic bread. For dessert, we had brownies. It was such an awesome meal and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We spent the rest of the night talking and catching up on each others lives. It was one of my favorite nights so far being back at Walsh.

This week is looking to be a really busy week, but I will be sure to write when I get a chance! I’ll mostly be studying for class and golfing. Tests for me started on Friday and I have a few more this week. Wish me luck!

We Want You! Student Activities Fair!

Hey Cavs,

So this past week was the Student Activities Fair. All (or most) of Walsh’s student organizations set up booths in David and talked to students about their clubs and what they entailed. At the beginning of each school year, this is a chance for freshmen and upperclassmen alike to inquire about clubs they are interested in and sign up for meetings and such! I was a part of the UPB Underground booth and so in case you missed the fair and would like some more information, here ya go!

Walsh’s underground is a group of students that work with the University Programming Board to help run the events we put on throughout the year. Already we have had Black Violin, the Drive-in movie, the comedian during Welcome Week, and some novelty events. These are a good overview of the events we put on throughout the entire year. Underground is a good way to get involved with UPB, especially if you would like to be a part of the board the following year. It obviously requires some time commitment but it is manageable. There are different levels of Underground, Maroon and Gold. Each requires different amounts of time, but overall there are a certain amount of meetings you need to go to as well as events you need to help out at. Anyone who is interested I encourage you to come to our first Underground meeting, this Wednesday September 15 at 9:15 in the basement of David. If you have any other questions, please contact me or Olivia Gruber. Hope to see you there!

In Other News…

Tomorrow and Tuesday are Walsh’s Women’s Golf Team’s home tournament at Sanctuary Golf Course. It is 5 minutes away from campus on Applegrove. Tee off is 9am. Come out and support your sports teams! We hope to keep doing well and take home team champions again! Wish us luck at least people! :)

Otherwise, this past has been a busy one with class and practice. I am still enjoying all of my classes thoroughly and hope that it continues throughout the semester! So until next time… have a great week!!!!

Junior year already?!?! Welcome week at WU!

Hey Everyone! and welcome back to school! I cannot believe I am already starting my junior year of college. It is all going by so fast, and with how busy this semester is going to be, I don’t think it is going to slow down.

WELCOME WEEK!!!!

After the first week of school I can already tell this is going to be a busy but great semester! Things are in full swing and welcome week has been quite exciting. I came back to Walsh a week before school started for golf camp. It was nice to be able to move in and get settled before the big commotion of everyone else moving in started. Golf camp was intense but it certainly paid off. This past Monday and Tuesday was our first golf tournament. We played in Kendallville, Indiana. The team took 2nd out of about 8 teams over the two days. Not a bad start if you ask me. Also, I took 2nd individually shooting a pair of 77s. It was a fun and well played tournament. Our next one is coming up on Monday and Tuesday at YSU’s Invitational. Wish us luck!

This year I am also involved with UPB (University Programming Board). We are an organization that runs a lot of the events here on campus. One of our big weeks of events is Welcome Week this past week and it went so well! On Saturday, we had a group called Black Violin come and provide some entertainment for the new freshmen who moved in earlier that day. They were amazing! Basically there are three guys in the group, two play violins and the third is a DJ. They play the violins to different beats and even modern songs. They have a cd of their own songs and also will put a spin on some classical music. It was really neat, and a lot of the freshmen seemed to enjoy it. We were all in front of the stage, out of seats and dancing to the music.

Then on Monday we had the Commuter Cookout. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this but I heard it went well. Our next big event was the Drive in Movie on the Grassy Knoll. We order this huge blow up movie screen and project a movie on it. Everyone brings blankets to sit on and enjoys popcorn while watching the movie. This year we showed Iron Man 2. I loved the first movie and this one was just as good. Then on Wednesday we brought in a comedian Tommy J. He is a regular on the Bob and Tom Radio Show as well as appeared on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. He was also supposed to appear Thursday Night on the Late Show. He was hysterical. I really enjoyed it. Most of us were in tears laughing so hard and our abs started to hurt. A good work out I guess! Finally the week was brought to a close with a novelty event in the David Center on Thursday. We had airbrush tattoos, a sno-cone machine, and a prize wheel where you could win some pretty good prizes after answering a question about Walsh correctly. It was a lot of fun.

CLASSES AGAIN… Homework starts, but it seems to be interesting material!

Now today is Friday. Last day of classes for the first week of school and right before a long holiday weekend! Speaking of classes, I am enjoying all of my classes so far. The class I seem to like to the most so far is my honors seminar class. The topic this year is Genocide in the Modern World. It is a discussion based class and everyone has a different view point on the different genocides and what is going on in the minds of the killers. As sad as the class is going to be, I also think it is going to be thought provoking and really interesting. My other classes also seem to all fit together in some way. I am taking Christian Moral Life, which seems to add onto the understand of my honors class. Also, Gender, another class, will also add some insight to any or all of my classes. Its going to be a pretty cool semester.

One of the big things I have going on this year is going to be my Junior Honors Thesis. I have yet to decide when and what I am doing for the project, but as that process starts, I will be sure to keep you updated.

Well thats all that has been going on so far. Its been a busy week and I am looking forward to the weekend when I can catch up on work and sleep and anything else I may want to do. Have a good Labor Day!

Can it really be over?!

This semester is quickly coming to an end. This week is finals! I cannot believe I am done with sophomore year. Its crazy to think about. Our golf season is winding down, classes are over and everyone is preparing for summer. I’ll be heading home May 4th. Our golf season ends May 1st with the Ohio Cup, but I’m sticking around for my boyfriend’s graduation. Even more crazy to think about!

Well, last week was our AMC Conference Championship. We played on Monday and Tuesday at Berkshire Golf Club. We Won!!! We were leading by 27 strokes the first day and then won by 40-something strokes. I shot 90 the first day (EWW!) and then 85 the second day. I tied for 5th individually. As a team we took 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and the two 5th places.

Unfortunately this year winning our conference championship does not automatically send us to Nationals because there were not 6 teams playing. We are doing everything we can in order to get to Nationals but it is looking tough. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Anyways, here are some pictures from the AMC Championship. Enjoy!!! And have a great summer!!!

What a Beautiful Day! :)

Right now it is 81 degrees outside and I am sitting outside on the Grassy Knoll with Courtney and Kathleen!!! It has been so nice out today! The sun has been shining and it has been warm. I am so happy that the weather is finally getting nice. It means good things for golf season! We are just doing some homework. Courtney and I have golf practice at 6. We are getting ready for our AMC Championship on Monday and Tuesday. Wish us iuck!!!

On another note dealing with golf, we are 3-0 so far this spring semester!! We won our first tournament like I believe I told you in my last blog. But this past weekend we won two more tournaments. We played in Mercyhurst’s tournament on Saturday. We won by 1 stroke team score. I shot a 77 and took second individually. Then on Sunday and Monday we played in Gannon University’s tournament. We took 1st again!! This time by 5 strokes. I didn’t play very well on Sunday, shooting an 86 but I came back on Monday shooting 80. We were very happy with the outcome of both tournaments. We need to keep doing well in order to make it to Nationals again. Fingers crossed!

We have a week left of classes. Next week is our last week of classes! I can’t believe how quickly this semester has gone by!!! Finals are the following week. I have 5 to take. I am looking forward to the summer.

Well that is it for now. I need to get some homework done. Only two more projects due before the end of the year!!! I’ll keep you posted on what is going on. BYE!
