Br. Charlie Bowl-a-thon

Every year Walsh University has a Bowl-a-thon to honor Brother Charlie. The purpose of this event is to raise money for student scholarship. Last night was this year’s Bowl-a-thon. The event was at Park Center Lanes, about five minutes away from Walsh. Over 35 teams registered for the event.

Each team had around 4 – 5 players. A few of the teams were made out of staff, faculty and alumni. So as you can see, the event was not solely for students. Due to the fact that it was a fund raising event for a non-profit organization, (Student Scholarship, for Walsh University) the overall cost for students was very cheap. It was only 5 dollars per person to play three games along with bowling shoes. This is extremely cheap compare to regular price.

My roommates and I made a team and went there last night. Two of my roommates Lacy and Aaron are very good bowlers. However, Matt my other roommate who is not an experienced bowler virtually beat everyone last night. He was bowling for fun, as he was saying last night. We were all surprised especially Lacy who claimed to win. Although we play games competitively and debate religion and politics regularly, in the end we are best friends. My roommates and I get a long very good together. We call ourselves 1B, which stands for the people who live in the apartment 1B.

Overall, last night was a very fun and entertaining night. I was fascinated to see all these people attended the event either to have fun, to help raise money for scholarship, or to just practice their bowling skills. Also It was a good time to see other friends and colleagues outside of school and mingle for a little bit.

One Month Gone, Already?!?!

Welcome to the last day of September 2010!

So here is is, one whole month officially accounted for and almost over. Where does the time go? It always seems like as you get older, time accelerates. If life is going by this fast just in university, what is going to happen out in the working world? :| I don’t want to think about that now . . .

Without further ado, here is what has been going on this week:

International Events

Face Painting at Fall Family Weekend

During Homecoming weekend, the Walsh International Club took up their paintbrushes once again as we offered free face painting services to children and parents alike.  I wish I could provide more details, but I was busy at a tennis match and could not render my services. I was called upon several times, especially when the club received a request for a pony. I hope everyone who helped out at the table had fun!

Cedar Point Plans

it has come to my attention that the International Affairs Office may be taking us Internationals to Cedar Point sometime during Fall break. Of course we have to go the weekend I am traveling. I haven’t been there since Freshman year! Dragster is hands-down the best ride there. Worth the ridiculously-long wait, even though the ride takes less than a minute.

Tennis time

Our new uniforms are in! The women have added on to our collection with a painfully cute maroon pleated skirt with a slightly fitted, white dri-fit top. Come spring season, we are going to look SO GOOD! Warm-up jackets are on the way, as are a new t-shirt design. Now the only problem is, where am I going to put all of these clothes?

To view our new pieces and look at other tennis gear, jump to: http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?#l=shop,pwp,c-1+100701/hf-10001+4294967109+4294963130/t-All_Women%27s_Tennis_Team_Sports

Business Club Bulletin

Keep the date! The Club will be hosting its first Luncheon on November 3rd, 2010 in the Barrette Business Center. More info to follow! Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 5th at 9:30pm. See you there!

Recycling Bins Are back!

Check out the area around your dorms. Recycling bins are back! With the RHA and the Environmental Club working together, we will have recycling services all year-round. Please put your trash to good use, don’t throw it out! Many things can be recycled, including: plastic bottles, pop cans, soup cans, printer paper, note paper, cereal boxes, pasta boxes and glass bottles.

Travel Tips and Tangents

Again, no access to pictures. So here are some tips:

Watch the seafood. Inland cities normally do not have the frshest seafood, so be wary. These dishes are best enjoyed on costal cities.

Research your destinations. Don’t blindly pick a city, just because other people say they have liked it. Your tastes are probably different then theirs. It is best to look up your desired destination to see if it is really a place you will enjoy visiting.

Have a good last day of September!

Family Weekend

Walsh family weekend is one of the most famous weekends on campus. Student’s families come over for a weekend of excitement full of fun activities. During this weekend, the UPB and the student activity office provide many different activities for the student’s families. Usually they plan they make sure that the family weekend falls during a Saturday in which the football team has a home game. So families could go watch the game in the morning and come back on campus across the street at the Hoover Park and have fun.

The family weekend virtually started Friday afternoon. The international club had Walsh University Around the World yesterday. They provided international music, food, and activities; in addition, they helped the visitors learn how Walsh University is making an impact across the globe.

A lot of families were already registered and some registered last night. The UPB presented the movie Toy Story 3 in the gym for everyone to watch. The plan was to have the movie outside; however, the weather was not very good. The movie had many audience of different age. Students a long with their parents and little sibs showed up and enjoyed this wonderful movie on a big screen.
Today, Saturday, parents will go to the President’s Breakfast in the morning in the Barret Center, while the students a long with their little sibs another delicious breakfast in the David Center. At 12:00 PM Walsh plays Ohio Dominican University at the fawcet stadium. Families are provided with ticket to attend the game if they want to.

Before the game finishes, almost all the student clubs will be at the Hoover Park preparing some sort of activities for the families and kids to come. For example, the international club will have a face painting and tattoo table.  There is going to be balloon animals, corn hole, photo booth, petting zoo, carnival games, habitat for humanity build, hot air balloon, professional storyteller, and many more.
Walsh family weekend is a wonderful weekend full of excitement and fun for those who are taking advantage of it.

The Demand for Multitasking

Hey there Walsh!

With week 3 of classes already over and done with, summer is already starting to feel like a distant memory. The only evidence I have to prove that summer indeed happened is my moderately tanned skin and the scar a certain horse made when she kicked me in the leg. Good thing it isn’t interfering with my tennis performance! Or maybe it is, which would explain a lot . . .

You will be hearing me say “I have been so busy lately” as a new mantra for this year, so I will send out a general disclaimer now: from now until I graduate, I will ALWAYS BE BUSY! :D I type that with a smile because I truly love how Walsh has inspired me to be so involved on campus. Here are some details on some specifics:

International Events

Ice cream social turns into student displacement

Lat week, the International Student Department and the Multicultural Affairs on campus came together and created a free ice cream bar for students and faculty to enjoy after lunch. A few of us Internationals, tired of being tied to our countries of origin, decided to play around with the world map. Argentinians were moved to Mexico, Australians traveled over to New Zealand, Canadians were scattered across the globe and our only Japanese student moved his country of origin to Oklahoma. The International director was only slightly amused, but it did inspire much conversation between the Internationals and Americans.

Club Fair generates new interest in the club!

A few hours were dedicated to recruiting fresh faces for all of the clubs and organizations here at Walsh. Some are National organizations and others are just getting started, but all of the clubs here at Walsh try to bring people with common interests together. I did get a little too competitive with the American Advertising Association while attracting members and I hope my friend Ryan can forgive me :)

Tennis time

We have just finished up our Fall season, with our last match against Baldwin Wallace today for the women. Some of our Walsh players went to Michigan this weekend for an ITA tournament. All of our players made a great appearance, most of them making it very far into the draw. A HUGE congratulations to Pierre Le Grange and Gary Innes who won the men’s doubles! Way to go boys, good luck with Nationals in Alabama!

Business Club Bulletin

BCC ran its first fundraiser this weekend. At the Fall Family Weekend, we sold 50/50 tickets as well as tickets to win one of 2 donated prizes. Thank-you to Giant Eagle for a gift card we used to purchase a Fall decoration basket and to Best Buy for a $50 gift card. We will still sell tickets tomorrow and hopefully make a decent profit.

Student Government’s up and running!

This past Thursday was our first official Walsh Student Government meeting of the 2010-2011 year! It was well attended, pretty well organized and very informative to all. President Jusseaume was our guest speaker for the evening and gave us the inside scoop of Walsh’s future plans. My favourite is the creation of an Arts Center this summer to be built where the old tennis courts used to be. I think my first donation as an alumna will be towards this center. Also in the works: a new addition to the library, wireless for Grove (hopefully soon!) and an environmental pavilion in Hoover park. Too bad I’m leaving, Walsh is just starting to get even better!

System down

If we are going to be using Sakai more often for classes, please make sure it is up and running in ship-shape conditions. Computers are a part of our lives, a huge part in this day and age. Hopefully Walsh can fix things soon and get the system’s glitches worked out. My own PC is a different story. I have never met a computer who wishes to end its own life so much.

Random Cats

We have some street-wise cats here at Walsh, and I have no idea where they have come from. Generally friendly, these cats just strut around and hang around the dumpsters, which then generally discourages people from touching them.

Travel Tips and Tangents

As my PC is on the fritz, I have no pictures to readily access. So here is some sound travel advice:

Remember to put toiletries in sealed plastic bags. You never know when your shampoo or shave gel will decide to explode in your luggage (also a precaution when transporting maple syrup, but I may be alone on this one).

On the day of traveling, wear easy to slip on/off shoes, minimal jewelry and nothing in pockets. It makes security checks that much easier.

Always review Mapquest/Google Maps directions. Double check the end destination is correct and avoid the “faster” route with many backroads. Not worth it if one gets lost anyways.

Check in next week when I have pictures to look at again!

Liberry? No Library!

For this particular entry I felt it naturally fitting to write from within the Library itself.  The Brother Edmond Drouin library, as it is called, is a resource at Walsh that is definitely worth getting to know.  Yes, it may not be as grand in size or structure as libraries of bigger, publicly funded universities.  However, what it lacks in size it makes up for in coziness.  Besides, because of online library databases and e-books, e-articles, and e-journals, the oversized libraries of old have been rendered obsolete.

The first notable thing that the library will help you with to get by in College is its help with research.  My majors fall into the humanities category, which means I have been writing countless research papers since I started as a freshman.  Even if you are in a field where you write very little, by attending a liberal arts college you will have to do research for a paper or two somewhere down the line.  In attaining the necessary research, you can either take advantage of the various search engines at your fingertips located on the libraries online homepage, or you can ask one of the skilled librarians at hand that are more than happy to assist you with whatever question you may have.

The next great thing about the library is that it’s filled with what are called books? Yes books!  These books, magazines, and encyclopedias can be used as excellent secondary sources for your research or even to be read for pleasure at your leisure. Haha disregard the second half of that statement.  One of the better advantages of the library is the various quiet rooms and tables hidden away to both study and do homework at.   These hideaways are perfect for escaping the distractions of everyday dormitory life and getting down to business.  The only major qualm I have with the library isn’t the libraries fault at all.  Rather it stems from the congregation of what I termed as “Commuting library squatters,” who throughout the day sit around the main computer area and act as if the library is merely a social hall to catch up on the latest Facebook updates.  In fact, I’m dealing with that very problem right now…be quiet!!!

Now that I’m done venting, I’d like to share with you the hidden gem of Walsh’s library.  However, before I do you need to promise not to abuse this great wealth of knowledge I’m about to entrust with you.  The Walsh University library has a vast DVD collection of both classic and modern hits that are absolutely free to check out and enjoy!  The collection contains hits ranging from “The Sting” to newer releases such as “Public Enemies.”  Again, be responsible and timely return what you have read or viewed because I want to see it as well!  The library has assisted me with countless papers, aided me in studying for numerous tests, and has entertained me on occasion, so I hope you use this great Walsh U resource to your advantage in the future.

Rant’s & Rave’s

At Walsh U we now just completed our third week of the fall semester and I don’t know about you, but I’m still a little overwhelmed about being back on campus. To make light of our troubles here on campus I decided to write what I believe is known as an acrostic poem, or at least that’s what Google came up with.  For your reading pleasure:

Consistently falling behind on homework no matter how hard you try.

Overdrawing from your bank account for tuition payments, book costs, and most importantly night’s out.

Learning to cope with the reality that Febreze may be the greatest invention, but that doesn’t mean it will solve all of your dorm room/apartment messes.

Living with the fact that no matter how hard you study, Mike of Jersey Shore will make more money off of calling his abdominals “The Situation” then you will with your degree.

Envying those college students, who despite astronomical costs, are seemingly at college solely to party.

Google solves every problem that Wikipedia cant.

Endlessly complaining about all of the stress you’re under as a college student, yet realizing you wouldn’t trade these experiences for anything.

Current events:

-This upcoming Sunday marks the beginning of the fall intramural season. Good luck to your flag football, soccer, and golf teams.

-Again, good luck to Walsh’s various fall athletic programs currently competing and doing quite well!

On-time to class: 2 weeks!!

Hey Walsh!

First, I would like to congratulate myself for being on-time to class for 2 weeks straight (technically 9 class day, but let’s not be picky)!!  I have come very close to being late, but fortunately I always made it.  It really takes dedication and preplanning to get this done.  Being on-time come naturally to some folks.  I hope it begins to come naturally to me by the end of the semester.

How was your week?  I had another busy week.  I can’t believe that we had this past Monday off!  It seemed like a full 5 day week to me.  I am sure it is because the last four days have been filled with various assignments due and readings, readings, and more readings.

I have only four classes this semester, but they are challenging.  My classes are Abnormal Psychology, Statistics for Behavioral Science, Cultural Diversity, and Senior Seminar.  Abnormal is very interesting so far.  I am excited to be in a class directly related to my major!

Stats! Statistics will be challenging for me.  Dr. Humphries was teaching on overdrive today.  He had my head spinning, but I kept my cool!  I am going to have to keep up with my reading and assignments if I want to pass this class with an A (got to aim high).

Seminar class is very intense.  Once you begin taking this seminar class, you realize that graduation is not far away.  However, I have much to do before that happens, like preparing for internship next semester.

Cultural Diversity will be an interesting class.  We are discussing touchy subjects, such as race, gender, sexual orientation.  Dr. Kelly asked the class if there was ever appropriate to use the  “N” word (white, black, or whomever)?  Of course, no one wanted to answer.  There was an uncomfortable silence, yet I believe it got everyones attention.  That has to be a great moment for a professor!  I think it was a good question to ask.  I believe college is THE place to discuss difficult subjects.  What do you think?

Have a good weekend everyone!

Fall! Fall! Football!

Are you ready for some football?  These famous words are like music to my ears.  College football kicked off the previous week and last night’s game between the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings marked the beginning of the 2010 NFL season!  For a die-hard football fan like myself the Fall can be quite the hectic time.  I mean there’s following your favorite team/s weekly, updating your fantasy football roster daily, watching Sportscenter hourly, and occasionally getting a pick-up game together with friends on the grassy knoll.  Yeah, I know what you’re thinking.  When does this guy set time aside to eat, sleep, and dare I say…do homework? Let’s not get too carried away, I eat nachos while watching the games and sleep during class. There problem solved. Boy do I make Ma and Pa proud!

Alright, let’s now discuss something a little more serious.  Why do I get the Eerie feeling that here at Walsh U, which undoubtedly resides in the great state of Ohio, has more…(this is difficult for me to type) Stee…(No I can’t do it!), has more Steelers fans then Browns fans walking around campus??? Say it isn’t so WU!  How could it have come to this?  Sure, blame it on the lowly Browns and there streak of bad luck. Ok, ok near half century of heartbreak.  But isn’t that what being an Ohio sports fans all about?  The Indians are dead last in the Central, his “Quitness” devastated our beloved Cavaliers, yet the Brownies are 0-0 as of today and could really use your support.  Mark my words!  You don’t want to be that fan sulking in his/her front runner jersey when Ohio’s own Cleveland Browns are back on top!  Because I know there is at least one thing you can agree with me on, Ohioans know how to party!  So prove me wrong, dawn your Browns jerseys with pride this season. And if all else fails, those Ohio State Buckeyes and even Walsh Cavaliers are looking mighty unstoppable!!!  Go Browns! Go WU! Go Buckeyes!  The 2010 football season is underway…Enjoy!

The Last “First Day”

journal logs version 2.0: IN COLOUR!!!

Welcome back to Walsh everyone!

And to all of you Freshmen, welcome for the first time. I hope you enjoy all that Walsh has to offer. I myself have really enjoyed the past 3 years here, and am sort of sad to finally be able to say I am a senior. At least this year I can finally justify my “senioritis” when it kicks in around March :)

This summer was spent in both countries: I interned here in Ohio at Junior Achievement for May and June and went home to work at camp for July and August. In both countries I experienced ridiculous heat, but luckily my Canadian job had access to a nice big pool.

So now I am back and ready to complete my Accounting degree. The workload should be reasonable enough, which will help my endless “to-do list” for all of my clubs and tennis duties. All things considered, Senior year has already been so much fun and, if I may be so bold to say, the best year yet!

International Events

Fun times in Cleveland Today!

I now have a stronger appreciation for this city by the lake.  This Labour Day weekend some of the Internationals and their Walsh Ambassadors piled into a rather large van and took off to experience “A Taste of Cleveland”. First we stopped off at our International Administrator’s lovely house for a quick lunch on the patio. Then we piled back into the van and drove down the road to Swings and Things, an amusement park of sorts. Having all of us internationals drive go-karts was, well, interesting. Let’s just say there was no international standards on road rules.

After some arcade games and pathetic prizes (honestly, even as a child I knew I was being ripped off) we again piled back into the van and headed off towards downtown. Keisuke and I opted out of the boat ride and air show as we saw it last year. We went to the Science Center and watched the IMAX movie “Hubble”. Totally worth it. After that we walked to E. 4th street for some deliciousness. We ate at La Strada and were blown away by the quality of out meal. Recommendation: The eggplant appetizer. After we joined up with the group and settled in for a good Train concert. I was very impressed with their live performance, as Patrick proved he did not need fancy editing programs to fine-tune his voice. Wonderful day, wonderful city. Cleveland!

Internationals and Americans enjoying Labor Day weekend.

Tennis time

With some of our members away on the Rome Experience trip, the men and women’s teams feel slightly incomplete. However, we are eager to get our fall season underway. I am excited to see our freshmen play and what positions everyone will play. I am the captain for the women this year, and hope to do what I can to make it a fun and fantastic season.

NEW: Business Club Bulletin!

I am the new President of the BCC! Eager to get our club up and running again, I am going to try my best to really make this year as productive and profitable as possible.  For anyone who is interested, the BCC (Business and Communications Club) is one of Walsh’s oldest and largest clubs designed for anyone within the School of Business or anyone in the Walsh community who wishes to bring a little business savvy into their lives. For more information on the club, please contact me at juliakole@walsh.edu for more details. See you at our first meeting! (date TBA)

Walsh School of Business introduces new pilot program

New this year to the school of Business is a new curriculum and new set of classes. My brother was lucky enough to be selected for this program and received a sweet piece of technology to use for his classes. I am slightly jealous, but am eager to hear what this new program entails.

New cafeteria: aesthetics get a thumbs up, the food, well . . .

it still needs some work. The new glass wall provides a wonderful view of campus and the David center atrium. The drinks outside of the main food area has cut down on lines. And despite what people say, I personally like the wall that hides the tray return from view. Alas, the food quality still leaves something to be desired.

Wireless everywhere! *almost*

I guess the petition paid off, because Walsh is almost 100% wireless! The Grove apartments are still not hooked up, although some of us can pull a very slow wireless connection from Alexis and Lemmon.

Travel Tips and Tangents

I’m still not done with this section yet! Good thing I didn’t clear my pictures from my computer yet. This week I will go once again to Italy, this week to the city of Tivoli.

Tivoli was a wonderful little town, famous for its Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana. Villa d’Este’s charm was in its fountains in the garden; spectacular works of art and grand examples of master engineering. These fountains ranged in size, from small trickles to dancing ponds to waterfalls. Every corner had its own unique fountain and architecture. Villa Adriana is a massive old Roman ruin, although it was preserved quite well. One could spend hours and hours exploring every building and detail of the property. Great weather just added onto the experience and made for a great trip out of Rome.

Tile and other architectural details from Villa Adriana.

Well I hope you enjoyed my rant for this week. In the future I may try to be more tech savvy and add in a video or two :)

Until then, enjoy your second week!

A Blog For All Seasons

Hey Walsh U!  Back to school already?  Not only did this past summer fly by at sonic speed, but the start to this fall semester also marked the beginning of my senior year of college!  It feels like just yesterday that I was saying goodbye to my high school classmates and beginning my undergraduate journey here at Walsh.  Now I’m weighing potential career choices, going to bed at a reasonable time, and stretching before exercising to prevent injury.  Well enough with the sob story, I’m getting old and I know it.    However, what’s a 20 something to do in the midst of this faltering economy?  The job market right now is just as promising as a date going well in which you met the person on Myspace…good luck!

I’ll tell you my personal answer, more and more schooling. I really enjoy learning and am not afraid to admit it.  School to me is “fake life” as I like to call it.  Not because it isn’t difficult, it definitely can be.  Or because you shouldn’t take your education seriously, on the contrary doing so may be the most important thing you will have done to this point in your life.  The pursuit of a college education is the one time in your life where you are in complete control of the direction of your future.  Here at Walsh you have among many other things, the ability to make lifelong friends, study abroad in various countries, and pursue a career path you find yourself to be passionate about.

At this point I’m going to introduce an addition to my blog which will stray from my typical philosophical jargon and will discuss current events.  My first current event is very simple.  “The Gods and the General,” which is the flag football team I play on and Reigning Champions here at Walsh University are concerned with the competitiveness of other flag football teams. Thus we are openly challenging all able body Walsh students to create a team of their own to attempt to dethrone the champions!  You can register a team at this link https://my.walsh.edu/walsh-life. Registration is due September 15th and the season officially begins September 19th.
