On-time to class: 2 weeks!!

Hey Walsh!

First, I would like to congratulate myself for being on-time to class for 2 weeks straight (technically 9 class day, but let’s not be picky)!!  I have come very close to being late, but fortunately I always made it.  It really takes dedication and preplanning to get this done.  Being on-time come naturally to some folks.  I hope it begins to come naturally to me by the end of the semester.

How was your week?  I had another busy week.  I can’t believe that we had this past Monday off!  It seemed like a full 5 day week to me.  I am sure it is because the last four days have been filled with various assignments due and readings, readings, and more readings.

I have only four classes this semester, but they are challenging.  My classes are Abnormal Psychology, Statistics for Behavioral Science, Cultural Diversity, and Senior Seminar.  Abnormal is very interesting so far.  I am excited to be in a class directly related to my major!

Stats! Statistics will be challenging for me.  Dr. Humphries was teaching on overdrive today.  He had my head spinning, but I kept my cool!  I am going to have to keep up with my reading and assignments if I want to pass this class with an A (got to aim high).

Seminar class is very intense.  Once you begin taking this seminar class, you realize that graduation is not far away.  However, I have much to do before that happens, like preparing for internship next semester.

Cultural Diversity will be an interesting class.  We are discussing touchy subjects, such as race, gender, sexual orientation.  Dr. Kelly asked the class if there was ever appropriate to use the  “N” word (white, black, or whomever)?  Of course, no one wanted to answer.  There was an uncomfortable silence, yet I believe it got everyones attention.  That has to be a great moment for a professor!  I think it was a good question to ask.  I believe college is THE place to discuss difficult subjects.  What do you think?

Have a good weekend everyone!

Fall Semester 2010: It’s going to be a busy one Walsh!!

Hey Walsh Family,

Welcome to my Life At Walsh.  My name is Jason West and I am excited to be entering my senior year.  I look forward to sharing my experiences and opinions about day to day life here at Walsh.

Let me first tell you about myself.  I have been a student here at Walsh University, since Fall 2007.  I am double majoring in Sociology and Psychology.  I am a commuter (I have been commuting from Akron for 3 years now).  Let me tell you, it is no fun commuting in the winter!  Commuting makes it difficult, but not impossible, to participate in many of the activities on campus.

However, I am a member of BSU (Black Student Union) and I was elected into the position of Diversity Affairs for Student Government Body.  I have also gone to Uganda for the past two years with Walsh’s global learning program.  I am the self professed Uganda Guru!   If you have any questions about the trip, please do not hesitate to ask.  I guarantee it will be a life changing experience for those who go.  I encourage everyone to go on one of the many global learning trips (especially Uganda)!

Speaking of BSU, we held a BBQ (in collaboration with Multicultural Affairs) on the Wednesday, outside of the David Center.  There was a great turnout of students.  94 students attended!

There was music and free food for all.  The church punch was especially good!

Later that evening we had our first BSU meeting of the semester.  There were about 40 students in attendance!!  I am glad to see that non black students are realizing that BSU is open to all students.

Well, the first week back to school was rather hectic!  I am sure it will be that way all semester.

Before I go, I want to tell you all about my personal goal.  Ok, I am one of those students that always seems to get to class late.  I have decided to change that behavior this semester.  IT WILL NOT EASY!  I am currently 5 school days late free.  I will keep you posted on how if goes this semester.

Have a good, long, safe weekend
